The Lazarus drug
Recently, I listened to a podcast on Hidden Brain called the Lazarus drug. Hidden Brain is a podcast site found on NPR that discusses human behavior and social sciences. The primary journalist Shankar Vedantam used this podcast to discuss the miracle drug known as Naloxone. Naloxone is a medication that is used on individuals who have overdosed on opioids. It works by rapidly counteracting the effects caused by an overdose of opioids which potentially brings the individual back alive hence the nickname "lazarus". As residents of Ohio, we all know there is an ongoing opioid epidemic that is affecting our population. It is important to know the signs of someone who is using so you can be aware. You never know who could be affected, addiction can choose anyone. Throughout the podcast, Vedantam interviewed three individuals who have either been addicted to opioids or have had a family member who was addicted. The individuals interviewed also discussed their personal view on the medication and its functionality. Some are even anti Naloxone because individuals who are using opioids they believe since they have the medication, more addicts are likely to commit more risks. Basically stating that these individuals are less worried about overdosing because they know they can be revived with Naloxone. I would highly suggest that you all listen to the podcast for more information. To listen to the podcast, click here. Also provide your input on the medication below!
